Sana Rehman is a fifth year medical student at University College London Medical School. She has always had a passion for women's health advocacy, fetal development and research. For these reasons, after her pre-clinical education, she took a year out to pursue an intercalated Bachelor of Science in Women's Health where she achieved a First Class Honours. Under the supervision of Professor Dimitrios Siassakos, her thesis explored whether reactive hypoglycaemia, defined as a 2-hour glucose tolerance test lower than the fasting value, represented undiagnosed glucose dysregulation which may predispose women to adverse fetal and neonatal outcomes, including stillbirth. Her thesis combined with the clinical experience of the team led to a change in local obstetric practice at University College London Hospital.
Since then, she has been involved in various research projects and has presented her work internationally. During her time at medical school, she has been the recipient of numerous academic awards, including distinctions across every year as well as the prestigious McGrath Prize for 3rd best overall performance in a cohort of 325 students. She has been Chair of Obstetrics, Gynaecology and Foetal Surgery Society where she developed a national lecture series on hot topics in O&G from internationally renowned speakers. She also has a passion for education which led to her creating a novel O&G teaching series for UCL medical students as well as termly teaching sessions on surgical topics. Sana enjoys volunteering in various capacities, including helping migrant women to access healthcare, teaching secondary school students on sexual health and abortion care as well as mentoring students from disadvantaged backgrounds with their medical school applications.
